2000 SPANISH GEOGRAPHIC AWARDS

The awards given out annually by the Founders Committee of the Spanish Geographic Society are in keeping with the main sentiment expressed in the articles of association: "The Spanish Geographic Society is aimed at encouraging the rediscovery of Spanish history throughout the world by Spanish people, promoting geographic, historical and social awareness of different peoples, creating an understanding of and humane contact with different cultures and ways of life and becoming the driving force behind travel projects that serve investigation, science, journalism, art and culture."

The awards went to the following people, companies and institutions:

SGS National Award - Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo

For his extensive professional career devoted to spreading travel among the Spanish, exploring and learning about the world, its peoples and its continents, and for his contribution to the education of future travelers.

SGS Image Award - La 2 Noticias de TVE

Lorenzo Milá and Fran Llorente on behalf of La 2 Noticias de TVE (Spanish News Program) for its permanent interest in geographic and environmental issues and for its invaluable contribution to making T.V. viewers aware of problems having to do with the earth, its conservation and its future.

SGS Trip of the Year Award - Juan Carlos González

A mailman from Castro Urdiales, who played an unusual role in ascending Mt. Everest on his own and without important logistical aids, demonstrating the utmost adventurous spirit.

SGS Enterprise/Company Award - EGMASA

Empresa Gestora de Medio Ambiente (Administrative Environment Company) responsible for the rapid decline in the number of fires in Andalusia and which was commended by the European Union for its environmental works. With this award, we would like to acknowledge their effective management of the Natural Parks of Andalusia.

SGS Investigation Award - Centro Cartográfico del Ejército

(Army Cartographic Center), for their cartographic works which have been a vital reference for geography and investigation of Spanish Territory, and for making digital cartography available through their digital map of Spain.

SGS Editorial Award - Siete Leguas

(Seven Leagues), El Mundo's travel publication, for the efforts made in creating a new medium of high literary quality and documentary rigor aimed at raising awareness of the travel world and the knowledge of the planet and its peoples.

SGS Member of the Year - Jordi Clos

A modern-day businessman and sponsor, founder of the Museum of Egyptology in Barcelona and the Clos Archaeological Foundation which promotes publicizing Egyptian studies and ancient culture and art in general throughout Spain.
