Since 1988, the Spanish Geographic Society has presented its annual Awards in a solemn ceremony in which members of the SGS and distinguished personages of the world of culture, travel, investigation and Spanish social life take part.

Ever since the first set was handed out in 1998, the awards have been gaining in prestige and social importance. The presentation of awards has become the most important and prestigious event of the SGS. The ceremonies have been presented by journalists as important as Paco Lobatón, Fernando Schwartz and Concha García-Campoy.

The Spanish Geographic Society awards follow in the founding spirit of this institution which can best be expressed through the articles of association: "The Spanish Geographic Society is aimed at encouraging the rediscovery of Spanish history throughout the world by Spanish people, promoting awareness, both Geographic and social, of different peoples, creating an understanding of and humane contact with different cultures and ways of life and becoming the driving force behind travel projects that serve investigation, science, journalism, art and culture."

The awards are given out in seven different categories: International, National, Enterprise/Company, Trip of the Year, Image, Publications and Investigation. Each year, they also include the appointment of a Member of Honor.
